Duke Senior:
The father of Rosalind and the rightful ruler of the dukedom in which the play is set. Having been banished by his usurping(দখলদারি) brother, Frederick, Duke Senior now lives in exile in the Forest of Ardenne (Arden) with a number of loyal men, including Lord Amiens and Jaques.
Celia:
The daughter of Duke Frederick and Rosalind’s dearest friend. She accompanies Rosalind while going in the Forest of Arden.
Duke Frederick:
The brother of Duke Senior and usurper of his throne. Duke Frederick’s cruel nature and volatile temper are displayed when he banishes his niece, Rosalind, from court without reason. That Celia, his own daughter, cannot mitigate his unfounded anger demonstrates the intensity of the duke’s hatefulness. He later changes his ways, dedicating himself to a monastic life and returning the crown to his brother.
Oliver:
The oldest son of Sir Rowland de Bois and sole inheritor of the de Bois estate. Oliver is a loveless young man who begrudges(ক্ষুব্ধ হওয়া) his brother, Orlando, a gentleman’s education. He admits to hating Orlando without cause or reason and goes to great lengths to ensure his brother’s downfall.
Jaques:
A faithful lord who accompanies Duke Senior into exile in the Forest of Ardenne. Jaques is an example of a stock figure in Elizabethan comedy, the man possessed of a hopelessly melancholy disposition.
Touchstone:
A clown in Duke Frederick’s court who accompanies Rosalind and Celia in their flight to Ardenne. Although Touchstone’s job, as fool, is to criticize the behavior and point out the folly of those around him.
Silvius:
A young, suffering shepherd, who is desperately in love with the disdainful Phoebe. Conforming to the model of Petrarchan love, Silvius prostrates himself before a woman who refuses to return his affections. In the end, however, he wins the object of his desire.
Phoebe:
A young shepherdess, who disdains the affections of Silvius. She falls in love with Ganymede, who is really Rosalind in disguise, but Rosalind tricks Phoebe into marrying Silvius.
Lord Amiens:
A faithful lord who accompanies Duke Senior into exile in the Forest of Ardenne. Lord Amiens is rather jolly and loves to sing.
Charles:
A professional wrestler in Duke Frederick’s court. He wanted to defeat Orlando but has defeated by him.
Sir Rowland de Bois:
The father of Oliver and Orlando, friend of Duke Senior, and enemy of Duke Frederick. Upon Sir Rowland’s death, the vast majority of his estate was handed over to Oliver according to the custom of primogeniture (পূর্বাধিকার).

সেকালের ফ্রান্স বিভক্ত ছিল একাধিক প্রদেশে (যেগুলিকে বলা হত ডিউক-শাসিত রাজ্য)। এমনই এক প্রদেশ শাসন করতেন জনৈক প্রবঞ্চক, যিনি তাঁর দাদা তথা রাজ্যের ন্যায়সঙ্গত শাসককে বলপূর্বক উচ্ছেদ করে মসনদ দখল করেছিলেন। স্বরাজ্য থেকে বিতাড়িত হয়ে উক্ত ডিউক জনাকতক বিশ্বস্ত অনুচর নিয়ে আশ্রয় নিয়েছিলেন আর্ডেনের বনে। সহমর্মী স্বেচ্ছানির্বাসিত এই সব বন্ধুদের নিয়ে সেই বনেই বাস করছিলেন মহান ডিউক। আর তাঁদের জমি ও রাজস্বভাগ ভোগদখল করে ফুলে ফেঁপে উঠছিলেন সেই প্রবঞ্চক।

বনের এই অবলা হরিণগুলিকে তাঁরা এত ভালবাসতেন যে, খাদ্যের প্রয়োজনে এগুলিকে হত্যা করতে খুব কষ্ট হত তাঁদের। শীতের হিমেল বাতাস ডিউককে তাঁর দুর্ভাগ্যের কথা স্মরণ করিয়ে যেত। তিনি সহ্য করতেন। ধৈর্য ধরতেন। বলতেন, “এই যে হিমেল হাওয়া আমার শরীরে কাঁপন ধরাচ্ছে, এরাই আমার সত্যিকারের সভাসদ।

তাই সে রাজি হয়ে গেল। আজকাল মল্লযুদ্ধ মানে গেঁয়ো চাষাভুষোদের খেলা। কিন্তু সেকালে এই খেলা ছিল রাজসভার একটি প্রিয় অবসর বিনোদন। রাজকুমারী সহ অন্যান্য অভিজাত রমণীরা এই খেলা দেখতে আসতেন। সেলিয়া ও রোজালিন্ড গেলেন সেই মল্লযুদ্ধের আসরে। কিন্তু গিয়ে যা দেখলেন, তাতে তাদের বুক ফেটে গেল। আসরের একদিকে এক অভিজ্ঞ মল্লযোদ্ধা, যিনি কিনা তাঁর মতো বহু দক্ষ যোদ্ধাকে প্রতিযোগিতার আসরে নিকেশ করেছেন; আর অন্য দিকে তাঁর বিরুদ্ধে নামা একটি অত্যন্ত অল্পবয়সী যুবক। ছেলেটির বয়স ও অভিজ্ঞতা, দুইই এত অল্প ছিল যে সবাই ধরেই নিয়েছিল, এই আসরেই তার ভবলীলা সাঙ্গ হতে চলেছে।
মেয়ে সেলিয়া ও ভাইঝি রোজালিন্ডকে দেখে ডিউক বললেন, “এই যে, আমার মায়েরাও গুটিগুটি পায়ে মল্লযুদ্ধ দেখতে এসেছো দেখছি। তবে আজকের খেলা তোমাদের ততটা ভাল লাগবে না। ঠিক সমকক্ষ যোদ্ধাদের মধ্যে তো আর যুদ্ধ হচ্ছে না। ছেলেটাকে দেখে দয়া হচ্ছে আমার। ওকে বুঝিয়ে সুঝিয়ে আসর থেকে সরিয়ে আনতে পারলেই মঙ্গল হয়। তা মায়েরা, তোমরা একবার ওর সঙ্গে কথা বলে দ্যাখো না, যদি ওকে বোঝাতে পারো।”
কাজটি সৎ। তাই ওদের বেশ মনে ধরল। প্রথমে সেলিয়া এসে তরুণ আগন্তুকটির সঙ্গে কথা বলল। অনুরোধ করল প্রতিযোগিতা থেকে সরে দাঁড়াতে। তারপর রোজালিন্ড এসে মিষ্টি কথায় তাকে বুঝিয়ে বলল এই প্রতিযোগিতা কেন তার পক্ষে বিপজ্জনক। কিন্তু সেই মিষ্টি কথার ফল হল উল্টো। যুবক তার সংকল্প তো ত্যাগ করলই না, বরং সুন্দরীদের সামনে নিজের শৌর্যপ্রদর্শনের একটা অদম্য ইচ্ছে চেপে বসল তার মনে। সে সবিনয়ে সেলিয়া ও রোজালিন্ডের অনুরোধ ফিরিয়ে দিল।
মেয়েরা তো মহাশঙ্কিত হয়ে উঠল। শেষে যুবক বলল, “আপনাদের মতো সুন্দরীদের অনুরোধ ফিরিয়ে দিতে আমার খুবই খারাপ লাগছে। আপনাদের শুভেচ্ছা দৃষ্টি এই প্রতিযোগিতায় আমার সহায়ক হোক। পরাজিত হলে জানবেন, আমি মহৎ কেউ ছিলাম না। আমার মৃত্যু হলে জানবেন, এক মৃত্যুপিপাসীর মৃত্যু হয়েছে। তাতে কারো কোনো ক্ষতি হবে না। আমার জন্য কাঁদার কেউ নেই। আমার জন্য জগতের কিছুই আটকাবে না। জগতে আমার কিছুই নেই। বরং যে জায়গাটুকু আমি দখল করে আছি, সেটুকু খালি হয়ে গেলে, সেখানে যোগ্যতর কেউ আসতে পারবে।
এক নির্বান্ধব পরিবেশ থেকে মুক্তি পাওয়ার জন্য ছেলেটি মৃত্যুকে আলিঙ্গন করতে চাইছিল দেখে ছেলেটির প্রতি সবচেয়ে বেশি কষ্ট হচ্ছিল রোজালিন্ডের। সে দেখল, ছেলেটি তো তারই মতো হতভাগ্য। রোজালিন্ডের দয়া হচ্ছিল ছেলেটির প্রতি। খেলার কঠিন মুহুর্তগুলির প্রতি তার একনিষ্ট মনযোগই বলে দিচ্ছিল, সে সেই মুহুর্তেই ছেলেটির প্রেমে পড়ে গিয়েছিল। দুই সুন্দরী অভিজাত রমণীর দয়া দেখে আগন্তুক যুবকের সাহস ও শক্তি দুইই বেড়ে গিয়েছিল। সে বিস্ময় সাধন করে প্রতিযোগীকে সম্পূর্ণ পরাভূত করল। লোকটার নড়াচড়া করার তো দূরের কথা, কথা বলারও ক্ষমতা রইল না।
ডিউক ফ্রেডেরিক তরুণ আগন্তুকের সাহস ও দক্ষতা দেখে মুগ্ধ হলেন। ছেলেটিকে নিজের তত্ত্বাবধানে রাখার মানসে তার নাম ও পিতৃপরিচয় জানতে চাইলেন। আগন্তুক জানালো যে, সে স্যার রোল্যান্ড ডে বয়েজের ছোটো ছেলে অর্ল্যান্ডো। অর্ল্যান্ডোর বাবা স্যার রোল্যান্ড ডে বয়েজ বছর কয়েক আগেই মারা গিয়েছিলেন। কিন্তু বেঁচে থাকতে তিনি ছিলেন নির্বাসিত ডিউকের এক অনুগত প্রজা ও বিশ্বস্ত বন্ধু। অর্ল্যান্ডো তার নির্বাসিত দাদার বন্ধুপুত্র জানা ফ্রেডেরিকের মন গেল বিষিয়ে। একরাশ বিরক্তি নিয়ে তিনি বেরিয়ে গেলেন। দাদার বন্ধুদের নামও শুনতে চাইতেন না তিনি।
ছেলেটির বীরত্ব তাঁকে মুগ্ধ করেছিল বলে তিনি শুধু এইটুকু বলে গেলেন, অর্ল্যান্ডো অন্য কারোর ছেলে হলে তাঁর ভাল লাগত। রোজালিন্ড কিন্তু তার বাবার পুরনো বন্ধুর ছেলেকে দেখে খুব খুশি হল। সে সেলিয়াকে বলল, “আমার বাবা স্যার রোল্যান্ড ডে বয়েজকে খুব ভালবাসতেন। যদি আগে জানতাম যে, এই যুবক তাঁর ছেলে, তাহলে চোখের জলে তাঁকে স্বাগত জানাতুম।”
দুই বোন তখন গেল যুবকের কাছে। ডিউকের হঠাৎ-অসন্তোষে ছেলেটি কিঞ্চিৎ হতভম্ব হয়ে পড়েছিল। দু’বোনে মিলে নরম কথায় তাকে উৎসাহিত করল। চলে আসার সময় আর একবার ফিরে এসে রোজালিন্ড তার বাবার মৃত বন্ধুর ছেলের সঙ্গে দু’টো ভদ্রতার কথা বলল। নিজের গলার হার খুলে সে বলল, “মহাশয়, আমার এই উপহার গ্রহণ করুন। আমার এই হতভাগ্য দশা না হলে, আপনাকে আরও মূল্যবান কিছু উপহার দিতাম।” অন্তঃপুরে নিভৃত আলাপের সময় রোজালিন্ড ঘুরে ফিরে শুধু অর্ল্যান্ডোর কথাই বলতে লাগল।
সেলিয়া বুঝতে পারল, তার বোন সুদর্শন তরুণ মল্লযোদ্ধাটির প্রেমে পড়েছে। সে রোজালিন্ডকে বলল, “এও কী সম্ভব? এত সহজে তুই ওর প্রেমে পড়ে গেলি?” রোজালিন্ড বলল, “ডিউক, মানে আমার বাবা, ওঁর বাবাকে খুব ভালবাসতেন কিনা!” সেলিয়া বলল, “তোর বাবা ওর বাবাকে ভালবাসতেন বলেই তুই ওর প্রেমে পড়ে গেলি। আমার বাবা তো ওর বাবাকে অপছন্দ করতেন।
কই, আমার তো ওকে খারাপ লাগেনি!” এদিকে রোল্যান্ড ডে বয়েজের ছেলেকে দেখে ফ্রেডেরিক উঠলেন খেপে। তাঁর মনে পড়ে গেল, অভিজাত রাজপুরুষদের মধ্যে অনেকেই নির্বাসিত ডিউকের বন্ধু ছিলেন। ভাইঝির প্রতিও হঠাৎ তাঁর রাগ হতে লাগল। কারণ, সবাই ওর গুণের প্রশংসা করত আর ওর বাবার দুর্ভাগ্যের জন্য ওর প্রতি সহানুভূতি দেখাত। সেলিয়া আর রোজালিন্ড অর্ল্যান্ডোকে নিয়ে কথা বলছে, এমন সময় ফ্রেডেরিক সেই ঘরে এসে হাজির হলেন।
দৃষ্টিতে আগুন ছিটিয়ে ফ্রেডেরিক রোজালিন্ডকে প্রাসাদ ছেড়ে নির্বাসিত বাবার কাছে চলে যেতেআদেশ করলেন। সেলিয়া বাবাকে নিবৃত্ত করার চেষ্টা করল। কিন্তু তার কথায় কান না দিয়ে ফ্রেডেরিক বললেন, রোজালিন্ডের মতো মেয়ের সঙ্গে তার থাকা উচিত নয়। সেলিয়া বলল, “তেমন হলে ওকে রেখে দেওয়ার কথা আদৌ তুলতাম না। আগে ছোটো ছিলাম। তাই ও কেমন মেয়ে বুঝতাম না। কিন্তু আজ এত দিন ধরে একসঙ্গে খেয়ে, ঘুমিয়ে, খেলে, লেখাপড়া করে আমি ও আসলে কেমন মেয়ে তা বুঝতে পারি। ওকে ছাড়া আমি থাকতে পারব না।
ফ্রেডেরিক বললেন, “তুই বোকার মতো ওর সালিশি করছিস। ওর রূপ, ওর ওই চুপ করে থাকা, ওর ধৈর্য দেখে লোকেরা ওর প্রতি সহানুভূতি দেখায়। ও চলে গেলে তোকে রূপে গুণে আরও মহীয়সী মনে হবে। তাই ওর হয়ে কথা বলিস না। জেনে রাখিস, আমার আদেশের নড়চড় হবে না।” রোজালিন্ডকে কাছে রেখে দেওয়ার জন্য বাবার কাছে সেলিয়ার সব আবেদনই নিষ্ফল হয়ে গেল। তখন সে নিজে রোজালিন্ডের পাশে দাঁড়াল। সেই রাতেই বাবার প্রাসাদ থেকে পালিয়ে এক বন্ধুকে সঙ্গে নিয়ে আর্ডেনের বনে রোজালিন্ডের বাবাকে খুঁজতে যাওয়ার প্রস্তাব দিল।
যাত্রা শুরুর আগে সেলিয়ার মনে হল, দামি পোষাক পরে দুই অল্পবয়সী মেয়ের রাস্তায় চলা নিরাপদ হবে না। সে গ্রামের মেয়েদের পোষাক পরে বের হওয়ার কথা বলল। রোজালিন্ড বলল, সবচেয়ে ভাল হবে, যদি তাদের একজন পুরুষ সাজে। তাই ঠিক হল। রোজালিন্ড দীর্ঘকায়া। সে গ্রাম্য যুবকের ছদ্মবেশ নিল। সেলিয়া পরল গ্রাম্য মেয়ের পোষাক। দুইজনে সাজল ভাই-বোন। রোজালিন্ড হল গ্যানিমিড আর সেলিয়া হল এলিয়েনা। অনেক দূরের পথ আর্ডেনের বন।

পথে তারা কয়েকটা আরামদায়ক সরাই আর ভাল থাকার জায়গা পেয়েছিল। কিন্তু আর্ডেনের বনে পৌঁছে তারা সেরকম কিছুই পেল না। গ্যানিমিড এতক্ষণ মজার মজার কথা বলে বোনের চিত্তবিনোদন করতে করতে আসছিল। এইবার খাবার আর আশ্রয়ের জন্য সেও কাতর হয়ে পড়ল। এলিয়েনার কাছে স্বীকার করল, পুরুষবেশ ফেলে মেয়েদের মতো চিৎকার করে কাঁদতে ইচ্ছে করছে তার। এলিয়েনা বলল, ক্লান্তিতে তা পা অবশ হয়ে আসছে। মেয়েরা দুর্বল, তাই তাদের স্বাচ্ছন্দ্যের ব্যবস্থা করা আর সান্ত্বনা দেওয়া পুরুষদেরই কাজ – এই কথা ভেবে পুরুষালি ভাব দেখিয়ে গ্যানিমিড বলল, “আয়, এলিয়েনা, বোন আমার।
আর একটুখানি। এই তো আমরা আর্ডেনের বনের কাছে এসেই পড়েছি।” কিন্তু কল্পিত পুরুষত্ব আর আরোপিত সাহস আর তার সঙ্গ দিল না। আর্ডেনের বনে তারা এসে পোঁছেছিল বটে। কিন্তু ডিউক এই বনের কোথায় আছেন তা তো আর তাদের জানা ছিল না। তারা ভাবল যে তারা বোধহয় পথ হারিয়েছে। খিদেয়, ক্লান্তিতে, অবসাদে হতোদ্যম ও মৃতপ্রায় হয়ে ঘাসের উপর বসে পড়ল। এমন সময় একটি গ্রাম্য লোক সেই খান দিয়ে যাচ্ছিল। তাকে দেখে গ্যানিমিড আর একবার পুরুষের ভাব করে গম্ভীরভাবে বলল, “রাখাল, এই নির্জন স্থানে আমাদের বিশ্রামস্থলের বড়ো প্রয়োজন। আমার এই ছোটো বোনটি যাত্রার ক্লান্তিতে আর ক্ষুধায় অবশ হয়ে আর চলতে পারছে না।
