এটা যেহেতু অনেক বড় একটা উপন্যাস তাই হয়তো এত সংক্ষেপে সবটা তুলে ধরা সম্ভব হবে না। তারপরও যেটেকু পারছি তুলে ধরার চেষ্টা করছি।

মিস্টার বেনেট তাঁর স্ত্রীকে না জানিয়ে বিংলের সাথে দেখা করে এবং বাসায় একে সবাইকে এটা বলে সারপ্রাইজ দেয়। বিংলের কাছে এরমধ্যেই পাঁচকন্যার খবর পৌঁছে যায় এবং সে দেখা করতে আসে বেনেট পরিবারের সাথে। মিসেস বেনেট তাঁকে খাবার জন্য আমন্ত্রণ করেন কিন্তু দূর্ভাগ্যবশত বিংলের একটা কাজ পড়ে যাওয়াতে সে যোগদান করতে পারে না। পাঁচকন্যা অবশ্য বিংলেকে চুপিসারে দেখে নিয়েছে তাই বিংলেকে নিয়ে তাঁদের মধ্যে কানাঘুঁষা হতে থাকে। সুযোগ সাথে যখন তাঁরা বল নাচের আসরে যায়।
পার্টিতে বিংলে তাঁর ঘনিষ্ঠ একজন বন্ধু, ডার্সি এবং তাঁর কয়েকজন আত্মীয়দের নিয়ে আসে। বেনেট পরিবারের পাঁচ কন্যাও সেখানে যায়। মেয়েদের মধ্যে জেন সবার বড় এবং অত্যন্ত ভদ্র, এলিজাবেথ মেজো এবং খুব বুদ্ধিমতী। জেনকে দেখেই বিংলে অভিভূত হয়ে যায় তাই সে জেনকে তাঁর সাথে নাচে অংশগ্রহণের জন্য আমন্ত্রণ করে। জেন তা সাদরে গ্রহণ করে এবং বিংলের সাথে নাচে। অন্যদিকে এলিজাবেথের সাথে ডার্সি খারাপ আচরণ করে তাই এলিজাবেথ মনে মনে ডার্সিকে ঘৃনা করা শুরু করে।
বিংলেরা তিন ভাইবোন (বিংলে, ক্যারোলিন বিংলে ও মিস হার্টস) মিলে মিলে নেদারফিল্ডে থাকে। ইতোমধ্যে বেনেট পরিবারের সাথে তাঁদের ভালো সম্পর্ক গড়ে ওঠে। উভয়ই উভয়ের বাড়ি দেখা করতে আসে। একবার জেন, বিংলেদের বাড়ি যাবার প্রাক্কালে বৃষ্টির কবলে পড়ে এবং অসুস্থ হয়ে যায়। অসুস্থ হবার ফলে তাঁকে সেদিন বিংলের বোনেরা আসতে দেয়া না। আসলে জেন যাতে অসুস্থ হয় এবং বিংলেদের সাথে থাকতে পারে আর তাতে হয়তো বিংলে ও জেনের মধ্যে সুসম্পর্ক গড়ে উঠবে এই আশায় মিসেস বেনেট জেনকে ইচ্ছে করেই বৃষ্টিতে ভিজে ভিজে ঘোড়ায় চড়ে বিংলেদের বাড়ি পাঠায়।
জেন অসুস্থ হয়ে পড়ায় জেনের মা ও এলিজাবেথ তাঁকে দেখতে আসে। একটু সুস্থ হলে জেন তাঁর বোনের সাথে তাঁদের বাড়ি চলে আসে৷ মিস্টার বেনেট, মিসেস বেনেটকে বলে যে তাঁদের বাড়ি একজন অতিথি আসবে তাই যেন ভাল খাবার রান্না করা হয়। আসলে অতিথিটি ছিল উইলিয়াম কলিন্স(যাজক), মিস্টার বেনেটের ভাইপো, যে মিস্টার বেনেটের মৃত্যুর পরে লংবোর্নের উত্তরাধিকারী হবে। আসলে তাঁর উদ্দেশ্য ছিলো মিস্টার বেনেটের পাঁচকন্যার মধ্যে যে কোন একজনকে বিয়ে করা তাহলে তাঁর সম্পত্তি আর বাইরের কেউ নিতে পারবে না৷
অবশ্য পাঁচ বোনের কেউঔ কলিন্সকে পছন্দ করতো না আর মিসেস বেনেট বা মিস্টার বেনেটও না। কথানুসারে কলিন্স, বেনেট পরিবারে বেড়াতে আসে এবং নানান বিষয়ে কথাবার্তা বলে। এরপর বেনেট কন্যারা মেরিটনের দিকে যাত্রা করে উইলিয়াম কলিন্সের সাথে। কিন্তু মেরিটন পৌঁছেই বেনেট কন্যারা যেন কলিন্সকে চিনেই না। তাঁদের নজর কেঁড়ে নেয় উইকহ্যাম নামের এক ভদ্রলোক। এলিজাবেথ তাঁকে দেখে পছন্দ করে ফেলে।
বেনেট কন্যাদের সাথে উইকহ্যামের খুঁদেবার্তা বিনিময় হয়। এরপর বেনেট কন্যাদের তাঁর খালার বাসায় পৌঁছে দেয় উইকহ্যাম ও ডেনি। ওদিকে উইকহ্যামকে দেখে মিস্টার বেনেটের ছোট তিন কন্যা ও পাগলপ্রায় তাই তাঁরা তাঁর খালাকে অনুরোধ করে উইকহ্যামকে তাঁর বাড়িতে আমন্ত্রণ করার জন্য। পরেরদিন উইকহ্যামের সাথে বল নাচের আসরে দেখা হয় বেনেট কন্যাদের। সবাই তো তাঁকে নিয়েই মশগুল। উইকহ্যাম, এলিজাবেথের কাছে ডার্সির নামে বানিয়ে বানিয়ে মিথ্যা বলতে থাকে যে কি করে ডার্সি তাঁকে ঠকিয়েছে।
এতে এলিজাবেথ, উইকহ্যামের প্রতি সহানুভূতি দেখায় আর তাঁর(এলিজাবেথের) মনে ডার্সির জন্য একটা বিরূপ প্রতিক্রিয়ার জন্ম নেয়৷ পরবর্তীতে নেদারফিল্ডের এক বল নাচের আসরে মিসেস বেনেট অনেকটা ঢাক ঢোল পিটিয়ে ঘোষণা করেন যে শীঘ্রই জেন ও বিংলে বিবাহবন্ধনে আবদ্ধ হতে যাচ্ছে, যা ডার্সির মনে প্রচণ্ড বিরক্তির উদ্রেক ঘটায়। আর তখনই মিস্টার কলিন্স, এলিজাবেথকে বিয়ের প্রস্তাব দেয় কিন্তু এলিজাবেথ তা প্রত্যাখ্যান করে। মিস্টার কলিন্স, এলিজাবেথের এউ ব্যবহারে হতবাক হয়ে যান।
আসলে তাঁর নিজের প্রতি অনেক উঁচু ধারণা ছিলো তাই এলিজাবেথ তাঁকে প্রত্যাখ্যান করায় তিনি মনে মনে একটু ক্ষুব্ধ হন এলিজাবেথের উপর। কিন্তু এলিজাবেথের বান্ধবী শার্লট লুকাসকে দেখে মিস্টার কলিন্স পছন্দ করে ফেলে এবং তাঁকে(শার্লট লুকাসকে) বিয়ের প্রস্তাব দেয়। লুকাস সেই সুযোগ হাতছাড়া করে না। তারা বিবাহবন্ধনে আবদ্ধ হয়। এরপরই বিংলে নেদারফিল্ড ত্যাগ করে লন্ডনে চলে যায়। কিছুদিন পর জেনের কাছে বিংলের বোন ক্যারোলিন একটদ চিঠি পাঠায়।
তাতে লেখা থাকে যে বিংলে আর নেদারফিল্ডে ফিরবে না এবং সে(বিংলে) ডার্সির বোন জর্জিয়ানাকে বিয়ে করবে৷ এটা শুনে জেন ভীষণ কষ্ট পায় ও মানসিকভাবে আহত হয়। কিন্তু বুদ্ধিমতী এলিজাবেথ বুঝে ফেলে যে ক্যারোলিন ও ডার্সি চক্রান্ত করে জেন ও বিংলের সম্পর্কে ফাটল ধরিয়েছে। এর কিছুদিন পর মিসেস বেনেটের ভাই ও তাঁর স্ত্রী বেড়াতে আসে তাঁদের বাসায়। জেনের মানসিক কষ্ট দেখে তাঁর(জেনের) মামী(মিসেস গার্ডিনার) জেনকে তাঁদের সাথে নিয়ে যেতে চায়।
মিসেস গার্ডিনারের প্রস্তাবে জেন রাজি হয়। জেন, এলিজাবেথ ও তাঁর মামা-মামী লন্ডনে চলে যায়। কিন্তু লন্ডনে গিয়ে জেনের সাথে ক্যারোলিনের দেখা হয় এবং ক্যারোলিন জেনের সাথে অত্যন্ত রূঢ় আচরণ করে। একদিন এলিজাবেথ ও জেন শার্লট লুকাস ও মিস্টার কলিন্সের সাথে দেখা করতে যায়। কিন্তু ভাগ্যবশত সেখানে ডার্সির সাথে এলিজাবেথের দেখা হয়ে যায়৷ তাঁরা দুজনে হাটতে বের হয় এবং ডার্সি বলে যে সেই বিংলেকে বাঁধা দিয়েছে জেনের কাছে যেতে। এটা শুনে এলিজাবেথ, ডার্সির উপর রেগে যায়।
তারপরও ডার্সি এলিজাবেথকে ভালোবাসার কথা বলে আর এলিজাবেথ তাঁকে একবাক্যে প্রত্যাখ্যান করে৷ কিন্তু পরে ডার্সি একটা চিঠি পাঠায় এলিজাবেথকে এবং তাতে সে বলে যে জেন ও বিংলের সম্পর্কের ফাটল ধরানোতে তাঁর হাত আছে। সে বুুঝতে পেরেছিল যে জেন হয়তো বিংলেকে সত্যিকার অর্থে ভালোবাসে না তাই সে(ডার্সি) অমনটা করেছে এবং সেই সাথে আরো জানায় যে উইকহ্যাম লোকটা আসলেই বড্ড খারাপ। সময় হলে সেটা সে(এলিজাবেথ) বুঝতেই পারবে।
এরপরই এলিজাবেথের কাছে খবর আসে যে উইকহ্যাম, এলিজাবেথের ছোটো বোন লিডিয়ার প্রেমে মশগুল। একথা তখন এলিজাবেথ তাঁর বাবাকে জানায়। কিছুদিন পর এলিজাবেথ তাঁর মামা-মামীর সাথে ডার্সিদের বাড়িতে বেড়াতে যায় এবং ডার্সি যে কত সম্পত্তির মালিক তা বুঝতে পারে। সে তখন মনে মনে ডার্সিকে নিয়ে ভাবতে শুরু করে। আর ওখানেই বিংলের সাথে দেখা হয়ে যায়। বিংলে স্বীকার করে যে সে এখনও জেনকে আগের মতোই ভালোবাসে। কিন্তু পরক্ষণেই একটা চিঠিতে এলিজাবেথ জানতে পারে যে লিডিয়া ও উইকহ্যাম পালিয়েছে।
এই খবর শুনে সে বাড়ি ফিরে যায়। ওদিকে লিডিয়াকে খুঁজতে মিস্টার বেনেট তার শ্যালককে(মিসেস বেনেটের ভাই) অনুরোধ করে। অনেক খোঁজাখুঁজির পর লিডিয়া ও উইকহ্যামকে পাওয়া যায় কিন্তু তখন উইকহ্যাম, লিডিয়াকে বিয়ে করতে রাজি হয়না কেননা সে অনেক টাকা দেনা তাই সে যৌতুক চায়। মিস্টার গার্ডনার তখন এসব জানিয়ে একটা চিঠি লিখে মিস্টার বেনেটকে। মিস্টার বেনেট ভাবে তার শ্যালকই হয়তো উইকহ্যামের চাহিদা পূরণ করেছে। কিন্তু আসলে তা করে ডার্সি।
সেই উইকহ্যামকে সর্বতোভাবে সহায়তা করে। এলিজাবেথ এসব তার মামীর থেকে জানতে পায় তখন সে তাঁর ভুল বুঝতে পারে এবং ডার্সিকে প্রত্যাখ্যান করার জন্য আফসোস করতে থাকে। কিছুদিন পর বিংলে নেদারফিল্ডে ফিরে আসে এবং জেনকে বিয়ের প্রস্তাব দেয়৷ তখন জেন তাঁকে গ্রহণ করে। এরপর মিসেস ক্যাথরিন নামের এক ভদ্রমহিলা(ডার্সির আত্মীয়া ও মিস্টার কলিন্সের শুভাকাঙ্ক্ষী(সে তাঁকে চাকরি দিয়েছিল)) এলিজাবেথের সাথে দেখা করে ডার্সির অনুপস্থিতিতে এবং তাঁকে শাসিয়ে যায় সে যেন ডার্সিকে বিয়ে না করে।
আসলে মিসেস ক্যাথরিনেরও একজন বিবাহযোগ্যা মেয়ে ছিল আর সে(মিসেস ক্যাথরিন) তাঁকে ডার্সির সাথে বিয়ে দিতে চেয়েছিল। যাই হোক এলিজাবেথ বলে সে ডার্সিকেই বিয়ে করবে। এর কিছুদিন পর ডার্সি লন্ডন থেকে ফিরে এলে সে(ডার্সি), এলিজাবেথকে বিয়ের প্রস্তাব দেয় এবং এলিজাবেথ এবার আর তাঁকে প্রত্যাখ্যান করে না। শেষমেশ বিংলে ও জেন এবং ডার্সি ও এলিজাবেথের বিবাহের মাধ্যমে উপন্যাসটি শেষ হয়।
English Summary:-
Since it is a very large novel, it may not be possible to summarize everything so briefly. Still trying to show what I can.The five daughters in the novel Mr. Bennet are Jane Bennet, Elizabeth Bennet (Lizzie), Mary Bennet, Catherine Bennet (Kate) and Lydia's father and Mrs. Bennet his wife. In the beginning, both the couples are seen fighting. Because there are five marriageable girls in their house. So Mrs. Bennet is always thinking about how to get them married When a gentleman named Charles Bingley becomes a tenant at Netherfield Park, Mrs. Bennet constantly urges her husband to meet Bingle because she believes that any of her daughters will marry Bingle.
Mr. Bennet visits Bingle without telling his wife and surprises everyone in the house by telling her. News of the quintuplets had already reached Bingle and he came to meet the Bennet family. Mrs. Bennet invites him to dinner but unfortunately, Bingle is unable to attend due to a falling job. Panchkanya, however, has secretly seen Bingley, so there is whispering among them about Bingley. By chance they go to a ball.
Bingley brings a close friend of his, Darcy, and some of his relatives to the party. The five daughters of the Bennett family also go there. Of the girls, Jane is the eldest and very polite, Elizabeth is mezzo and very intelligent. Bingley is overwhelmed by Jane so he invites Jane to dance with him. Jane accepts and dances with Bingle. On the other hand Darcy misbehaves with Elizabeth so Elizabeth starts to hate Darcy in her heart.
The Bingleys live in Netherfield with three siblings (Bingley, Caroline Bingley and Miss Harts). Meanwhile, they developed a good relationship with the Bennet family. Both come to visit each other's house. Once Jane, on the eve of going to the Binglades' house, is caught in the rain and falls ill.
Because of his illness, Bingle's sisters did not allow him to come that day. In fact, Mrs. Bennet sent Jane to the Binglades' home on horseback in the rain, in the hope that Jane would be sick and stay with the Binglades, hoping that it might lead to a better relationship between Bingley and Jane.
Jane's mother and Elizabeth come to visit Jane as she falls ill. After a little recovery, Jane moves to their house with her sister Mr. Bennet tells Mrs. Bennet that a guest will be coming to their house so cook a good meal. The guest was actually William Collins (the priest), Mr. Bennet's nephew, who would inherit Longbourn after Mr. Bennet's death. In fact, his intention was to marry any one of Mr. Bennet's five daughters so that no outsider could take his property.
Of course, none of the five sisters liked Collins, neither Mrs. Bennet nor Mr. Bennet. According to Collins, the Bennetts visit the family and talk about various things. The Bennet daughters then traveled to Meryton with William Collins. But the Bennet daughters did not recognize Collins when they arrived at Meryton. A gentleman named Wickham caught their eye. Elizabeth likes him.
Wickham exchanges letters with the Bennet daughters. Wickham and Denny then deliver the Bennet daughters to his aunt's house. On the other hand, seeing Wickham, Mr. Bennet's three younger daughters are also mad, so they request their aunt to invite Wickham to their house. The Bennet daughters meet Wickham at a ball the next day. Everyone is obsessed with him. Wickham continues to lie to Elizabeth in Darcy's name about how Darcy cheated on him.
This causes Elizabeth to sympathize with Wickham and develop an adverse reaction to Darcy in her (Elizabeth's) mind. Later, at a ball in Netherfield, Mrs. Bennet announces with much fanfare that Jane and Bingley are soon to be married, much to Darcy's chagrin. And then Mr. Collins proposes marriage to Elizabeth but Elizabeth rejects it. Mr. Collins is shocked by Elizabeth's use of au.
In fact, he had a very high opinion of himself, so he was a little angry with Elizabeth because she rejected him. But Mr. Collins takes a liking to Elizabeth's girlfriend Charlotte Lucas and proposes to her (Charlotte Lucas). Lucas doesn't miss that opportunity. They are married.
