The Narrator
One of the five men on the ship in the Thames. He is an unnamed man on board the Nellie who relates Marlow's story to the reader.
Marlow
The protagonist of 'Heart of Darkness'. 'Heart of Darkness is mostly made up of his story about his journey into the Belgian Congo. Marlow is philosophical, independent-minded, and generally skeptical of those around him.
Kurtz
The chief of the Inner Station and the object of Marlow’s quest. Kurtz is a man of many talents, among other things, that he is a gifted musician and a fine painter. Kurtz is a man who understands the power of words, and his writings are marked by an eloquence that obscures their horrifying message. Although he remains an enigma even to Marlow, Kurtz clearly exerts a powerful influence on the people in his life.
Aunt
Marlow’s relative, who secures him a position with the Company. She believes firmly in imperialism as a charitable activity that brings civilization and religion to suffering, simple savages.
General manager
The chief agent of the Company in its African territory, who runs the Central Station.
Chief accountant

The Pilgrims
Company agents at the Central Station waiting for a chance to be promoted to trading posts, so they can then earn percentages of the ivory they ship back. Marlow gives them the derisive nickname 'Pilgrims' because they carry long wooden staves wherever they go.
Russian trader
A Russian sailor who has gone into the African interior as the trading representative of a Dutch company. He is boyish in appearance and temperament, and seems to exist wholly on the glamour of youth and the audacity of adventurousness. He is also a wanderer and trader who wears a multi-colored patched jacket that makes him look like a harlequin (a jester). He is a devoted follower of Kurtz’s.
Kurtz’s Intended
The woman in Europe to whom Kurtz is betrothed to be married. Marlow goes to visit her after Kurtz’s death. She is incredibly idealistic about both Kurtz and the colonization of Africa. She continues to mourn Kurtz as a great man even a year after he dies. Her unshakable certainty about Kurtz’s love for her reinforces Marlow’s belief that women live in a dream world, well insulated from reality.
Brickmaker
The brickmaker, whom Marlow also meets at the Central Station, is a favorite of the manager and seems to be a kind of corporate spy. He never actually produces any bricks, as he is supposedly waiting for some essential element that is never delivered.
Helmsman
A young man from the coast trained by Marlow’s predecessor to pilot the steamer. He is killed when the steamer is attacked by natives hiding on the riverbanks.
Kurtz’s African mistress
A fiercely beautiful woman loaded with jewelry who appears on the shore when Marlow’s steamer arrives at and leaves the Inner Station. She seems to exert an undue influence over both Kurtz and the natives around the station, and the Russian trader points her out as someone to fear.

"Heart of Darkness" জোসেফ কনরাড কর্তৃক ন্যারেটিভ পদ্ধতিতে লেখা একটি ইংরেজি উপন্যাস। এই উপন্যাসে চার্লস মার্লো নামের এক নাবিকের জীবনের গুরুত্বপূর্ণ এক অধ্যায় স্থান পেয়েছে। এই চার্লস মার্লো নামের মানুষটির আফ্রিকা(আফ্রিকার কঙ্গো নদী) ভ্রমণ এবং Colonization সম্পর্কে তার ব্যক্তিগত অভিজ্ঞতার কথা বর্ণনা করা হয়েছে কাহিনীতে। পুরো উপন্যাসে শুধু দুইজন গুরুত্বপূর্ণ চরিত্রের নাম উল্লেখ আছে।

সেন্ট্রাল স্টেশনের প্রধান ছিলেন General Manager. সেখানে গিয়ে জানতে পারেন, মার্লোর স্টিম বোটটি ভেঙে গেছে যা মেরামত করতে মাসখানেক সময় লাগবে। চাকরি ক্ষেত্রে ট্রেডিং পোস্ট এবং সেন্ট্রাল স্টেশনের পশ্চিমা প্রতিনিধিদের সান্নিধ্যে এসে তিক্ত অভিজ্ঞতা অর্জন করে মার্লো। কোম্পানির কাজ ছিলো হাতির দাঁত সংগ্রহ করে ইউরোপে পাচার করা।

কিছুদিন পর, স্টিমার মেরামত করা শেষ হলে, মার্লো যাত্রা শুরু করে কুর্টজের ইনার স্টেশনে, যেখানে কুর্টজের অধীনে কাজ করবেন মার্লো। যাত্রার শুরুর দিন থেকে কুর্টজের স্টেশনে যেতে দুই মাস সময় লাগে। মার্লোর সাথে জাহাজে ছিলো ম্যানেজার, ৬০ জন "তীর্থযাত্রী" (Pilgrims) এবং প্রায় ২০ জন নরখাদক (Cannibal) যাদেরকে জাহাজের কর্মচারী হিসেবে তালিকাভুক্ত করা হয়।
তারা ইনার স্টেশন থেকে আট মাইল ভাঁটিতে ঐ রাতের জন্য বিশ্রাম নেয়। পথিমধ্যে তাদের উপর একটা আক্রমণ হয় আফ্রিকার নেটিভদের দ্বারা। একটা গুজব শোনা যায়, যে কুর্টজ মারা গেছে। কিন্তু মার্লো এ কথা বিশ্বাস করে না। আফ্রিকার দুর্গম বুনো প্রান্তরে কাজ করতে গিয়ে কুর্টজ নামের এজেন্টের ব্যাপারে কৌতূহলী হয়ে ওঠে মার্লো। এই কুর্টজ তার কর্মদক্ষতার গুনে অতুলনীয় এক ইমেজ গড়ে তুলেছেন কঙ্গো তে।
সেখানকার স্টেশনগুলোর মূল কাজ হলো হাতির দাঁত সংগ্রহ করে ইউরোপে পাঠিয়ে দেয়া। এ কাজে সাফল্যের দিক দিয়ে অন্যসব এজেন্টেদেরকে ছাড়িয়ে যান কুর্টজ। তার এই বিশেষ গুন ক্যারিয়ারকে যেমন উজ্জ্বল করে, তেমনি তার কলিগদের মাঝে ছড়ায় ঈর্ষার আগুন। সেন্ট্রাল স্টেশনের ম্যানেজার স্বয়ং কুর্টজের ব্যাপারে ঈর্ষান্বিত। কুর্টজ তার আসনটিকে টলিয়ে দিতে পারে, এই ভয়ে কুর্টজের বিরুদ্ধে ষড়যন্ত্রে লিপ্ত হন ম্যানেজার।
সবার মুখে কুর্টজের প্রশংসা শুনে কল্পনায় মার্লো তাকে অসাধারণ ব্যক্তি হিসেবে ভেবে নেয়। কুর্টজকে দেখার জন্য ব্যাকুল হয়ে ওঠে মার্লো। স্টিমারে বিপদসংকুল দীর্ঘ যাত্রার পর অবশেষে একদিন বহু আকাঙ্ক্ষিত কুর্টজের দেখা পায় মার্লো। সেখানে এই অসাধারণ ব্যক্তিটির মাঝে মার্লো আবিষ্কার করে অকল্পনীয় দ্বৈত সত্তা।
যে কুর্টজ একদিকে পেশাগত কাজে সুদক্ষ, সাংগঠনিক কাজে বলিষ্ঠ, কবি এবং চিত্রকর, সেই কুর্টজ ই আবার শিরশ্ছেদের মত বর্বরোচিত কাজে লিপ্ত , বেশি বেশি হাতির দাঁত পাওয়ার জন্য লালায়িত! মার্লোদের শিপে যে নেটিভদের দ্বারা আক্রমণ হয়েছিল সেটাও কুর্টজের নেতৃত্বই হয়েছে যেন তাকে এই কলোনি ছাড়তে না হয়৷ মানুষের সুকুমার বৃত্তির অপরপিঠে যে অদৃশ্য অন্ধকার জগৎ, আফ্রিকার গহীন বুনো প্রান্তরে এসে মারলো নিজ চোখে দেখতে পায় পাপের সেই ভয়াল জগৎটাকে। এমনকি সে নিজের আত্মার প্রতিচ্ছবি দেখতে পায় পৃথিবীর আদিমতম পরিবেশে এসে।
উপন্যাসের শেষের দিকে দেখা যায়, কুর্টজ অসুস্থ হয়ে মারা যায়। মারা যাওয়ার আগে কুর্টজ মার্লোকে তার বাগদত্তার (Fiancee) একটা ছবি ও তার পুরনো ফাইল এবং কাগজ পত্র দিয়ে যায়। মারা যাবার সময় কুর্টজ উচ্চারণ করে The horror! The horror! মানে সে দাসপ্রথা ও সাম্রাজ্যবাদের প্রতিচ্ছবি তুলে ধরার চেষ্টা করেছে শেষমুহুর্তে।

Heart of Darkness centers around Marlow. The Narrator describes a night spent on a ship in the mouth of the Thames River in England. Marlow, an introspective sailor, and his journey up the Congo River to meet Kurtz, reputed to be an idealistic man of great abilities. With the help of his well-connected aunt, Marlow takes a job as a riverboat captain with the Company, a Belgian concern organized to trade in the Congo.
First he travels to the European city he describes as a "whited sepulcher" to visit the Company headquarters, and then to Africa and up the Congo to assume command of his ship. The Company headquarters is strangely ominous, and on his voyage to Africa he witnesses widespread inefficiency and brutality in the Company’s stations.
The native inhabitants of the region have been forced into the Company’s service, and they suffer terribly from overwork and ill treatment at the hands of the Company’s agents. While at the Company's Outer Station, Marlow meets the Company's Chief Accountant. He mentions a remarkable man named Kurtz, who runs the Company's Inner Station deep in the jungle.
Marlow hikes from the Outer Station to the Central Station, where he discovers that the steamship he's supposed to pilot recently sank in an accident. So, his interest in Kurtz grows during this period. He learns that Kurtz is a man of impressive abilities and enlightened morals, and is marked for rapid advancement in the Company. He learns also that the General Manager who runs Central Station and his crony the Brickmaker fear Kurtz as a threat to their positions. Marlow finds himself almost obsessed with meeting Kurtz, who is also rumored to be sick.
Marlow eventually gets the parts he needs to repair his ship, and he and the manager set out with a few agents (whom Marlow calls pilgrims because of their strange habit of carrying long, wooden staves wherever they go) and a crew of cannibals on a long, difficult voyage up the river. The trip is long and difficult. The dense jungle and the oppressive silence make everyone aboard a little jumpy, and the occasional glimpse of a native village or the sound of drums works the pilgrims into a frenzy.
Marlow and his crew come across a hut with stacked firewood, together with a note saying that the wood is for them but that they should approach cautiously. Shortly after the steamer has taken on the firewood, it is surrounded by a dense fog. When the fog clears, the ship is attacked by an unseen band of natives, who fire arrows from the safety of the forest. The African helmsman is killed before Marlow frightens the natives away with the ship’s steam whistle.
Not long after, Marlow and his companions arrive at Kurtz’s Inner Station, expecting to find him dead, but a half-crazed Russian trader, who meets them as they come ashore, assures them that everything is fine and informs them that he is the one who left the wood. Marlow talks to the Russian trader and realizes that Kurtz has made himself into a brutal in the surrounding territory in search of ivory and vicious god to the natives.
When the General Manager and his men bring Kurtz out from the station house on a stretcher, the natives, including a woman who seems to be Kurtz's mistress, appear ready to riot. But Kurtz calms them and they melt back into the forest.
The manager brings Kurtz, who is quite ill, aboard the steamer. A beautiful native woman, apparently Kurtz’s mistress, appears on the shore and stares out at the ship. The Russian implies that she is somehow involved with Kurtz and has caused trouble before through her influence over him. Then the Russian reveals to Marlow, after swearing him to secrecy, that Kurtz had ordered the attack on the steamer to make them believe he was dead in order that they might turn back and leave him to his plans. The Russian then leaves by canoe, fearing the displeasure of the manager. That night, Kurtz disappears and Marlow discovers Kurtz crawling toward the native camp.
Marlow stops him and convinces him to return to the ship. They set off down the river the next morning, but Kurtz’s health is failing fast. Marlow listens to Kurtz talk while he pilots the ship, and Kurtz entrusts Marlow with a packet of personal documents, including an eloquent pamphlet on civilizing the savages which ends with a scrawled message that says, “Exterminate all the brutes!”
The steamer breaks down, and they have to stop for repairs. Kurtz dies, uttering his dying words are: "The horror! The horror!" Marlow believes Kurtz is judging himself and the world. Marlow falls ill soon after and barely survives. Eventually he returns to Europe and goes to see Kurtz’s Intended (his fiancée).
She is still in mourning, even though it has been over a year since Kurtz’s death, and she praises him as a paragon of virtue and achievement. She believes Kurtz is a great man, both talented and moral, and asks Marlow to tell her Kurtz's last words but Marlow cannot bring himself to shatter her illusions with the truth. Instead, he tells her that Kurtz’s last word was her name.
On the ship in the Thames, Marlow falls silent, and as the Narrator stares out from the ship it seems to him that the Thames leads “into the heart of an immense darkness."
